What Is Windows XP Mode? Windows XP Mode allows end users to run older Windows XP applications on Windows 7 Ultimate and Professional versions. Windows XP Mode installs a virtual hard disk file that contains Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Windows XP Mode requires client virtualization software like Windows Virtual PC.

What Is Windows Virtual PC? With Windows Virtual PC you can accomplish the following tasks:

Create separate virtual machines (VMs) on the Windows desktop. Each VM functions as the hardware of a complete physical computer.
Use VMs to run different versions of Windows operating systems. You may do this only as permitted within the Microsoft Software License Terms (formerly "EULA").

In addition to Windows Vista, you can deploy many versions of Windows 7 inside a VM on a computer running an edition of Windows 7 that supports Virtual PC or third-party virtualization software, provided that both the virtual and the physical software are properly licensed.

How Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode Work Together Virtualization, together with Windows XP Mode, allows customers to run legacy applications in a tested software environment, instead of delaying the deployment of a new operating system because of application-compatibility concerns.

Terms of Agreement
Once terms are accepted, system builders can preinstall and distribute the Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC software bits on Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate systems when these products are available through Authorized Microsoft OEM Distributors shortly before General Availability on October 22.
