On Thursday, October 23, Microsoft released a security update with a Microsoft Security Response Center bulletin severity rating of Important on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The changes for this update are not in the 16489 SP2 beta escrow build that was published to Connect and Windows Update. Please read the security bulletin (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-067.mspx) to determine whether you are exposed or will require the mitigations that the bulletin calls out. If not, then you can continue to stay on the build 16489 until the beta is released next week. Otherwise, you may want to uninstall the SP2 beta escrow build in preparation for the beta’s release.
Security Update Details This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Server service. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if an affected system receives a specially crafted Remote Procedure Call request. On Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability without authentication to run arbitrary code or, possible craft a wormable exploit. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect network resources from attacks that originate outside the enterprise perimeter.
Security Update Rating This security update is rated Critical for all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and rated Important for all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.
The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting the way that the Server service handles RPC requests. Recommendation:
